Redefining Strength: Innercity Weightlifting

Here at H+A, we’re very fortunate to have a chance to work with many great individuals. One of them, Jon Feinman, was ending his work with AmeriCorps when he founded Innercity Weightlifting in 2010, a weight training program with facilities in Dorchester aimed at making relationships among Boston’s urban youth.

“Our mission is to reduce violence and promote professional, personal and academic achievement among urban youth. We work with young people at the highest risk for violence in order to reduce youth violence by getting our students off the streets and into the gym, where they are empowered with the confidence and positive support needed to say no to violence and yes to opportunity.”

Along with David, Jon was recognized last year as one of BostInno’s 50 on Fire for working toward “social innovation” and for helping to create a “a support system and a community to lean on”. More recently, ESPN’s Sports Center produced a short feature with Jon and several of the young men he has mentored and encouraged. The 15 minute piece is just a small glimpse into the amazing work being done across our city.
