Four51 Marlborough Wins Brick in Architecture Award

Four51 Marlborough Wins Brick in Architecture Award

This month, The Brick Industry Association (BIA) selected Four51 Marlborough as a Bronze winner of the 2018 Brick in Architecture Awards in the Residential Multifamily category. The association honored a total of 19 winners across five categories for “outstanding design that incorporates clay brick.” Since 1989, the BIA is the only association in the country to represent both manufacturers and distributors in the clay brick industry, making this program “the nation’s premiere architectural award.”

Located on Marlborough Street in Boston’s Back Bay, Four51 Marlborough presents a contemporary, contextually-sensitive design to complement its 19th-century context. Roman bricks are used throughout the façade, working together with special chamfered and L-shaped bricks that were incorporated to turn corners. Two textural techniques were utilized to define layers and zones; the smooth ‘outer layer’ is created with a staggered running bond while the textural ‘inner layer’ is achieved through a ¾’’ set-back Flemish pattern with a recessed small brick end, providing further relief.

We share this award with our client and contractor, Holland Development (also the Architect of Record), Allied Consulting Engineering Services, DeCelle-Burke and Associates, Souza True & Partners, project photographer, Trent Bell, and the rest of the project team.
